I've seen other Dropship guides on here but wanted to do a simple and direct explanation about flying one by explaining it in a way that I could better understand and hope you will too.
I am not a helicopter pilot nor am I an expert with the dropship. There is a reason I became an infantry rifleman in the Marines. I suck at controlling aircraft.
Append this as needed.
Step 1: First of all you must address the dropship. "Hello dropship"
Just kidding. Proceed.
I first wanted to provide helicopter controls (posted by various authors on http://www.wikihow.com) as a reference point and their game controller equivalent.
[Cyclic: The main control stick coming up between your legs is called the cyclic. Push forward, the nose goes down. Pull back, the nose goes up. Push left, the helicopter banks (or tilts) left. Push right, bank right.]
This would be the left stick on the game controls. It works the same as above but like an LAV/HAV this gives you thrust forwards, backwards and roll side to side as well. The faster you want to go forward or backward the more your nose will dip downward or upward in the direction you want to go.
Unlike an LAV/HAV you donGÇÖt come to a sudden stop when you let off the stick though. You drift and continue to go the speed you were going for some time. You also need to right the nose back level. For this reason you need to plan a counter maneuver for every maneuver (see below).
Also, I believe you lose altitude the more forward or backward you go. So, if you want to evade by going forward very quickly you need to compensate by also pushing your L1 Upward Thrust a little too. Hence, you go up at somewhere around a 45-¦ angle (for simplicityGÇÖs sake).

[Pedals: The pedals on the floor control the tail rotor. Push the left pedal to turn the nose left, push right to turn the nose right. You use these to keep the noise pointed forward. If you want to turn the helicopter, use the cyclic; adjust the pedals only as necessary to keep the nose from being cocked off to one side or the other.]
This would be the right stick on your controller. Left and right give you yaw. Yaw means you turn without leaning or banking (rolling). Up and down on the left stick is only to move your camera up or down so you can see what is below or above you.
If you yaw you will bank (roll) some too so tapping the left stick to bank a little the opposite way helps to keep you steady. AgainGǪ counter maneuver.

[Collective: The stick coming out of the floor by your left thigh is the collective. It makes the rotor blades blow more or less air. When you pull up on the collective all the rotor blades rotate slightly so that each blade takes a bigger bite and more airflow is induced through the rotor system.]
This is the equivalent of the L1 and L2 buttons on your controller. These buttons do not control acceleration or deceleration. They control upward and downward thrust only.
However, since your dropship does not immediately respond to commands it takes some time for upward and downward thrust to kick in. If you are going forward and then hit L1 for upward thrust you will notice that your ship will slow down and the nose will point up. When ascending you will go backwards slightly so tapping the left stick forward will help you go more or less straight up.
This is a good way to slow your ship and gain altitude. Or, again if you are evading then push forward on your stick while holding L1 to go up and forward quickly.

[Throttle: The throttle that controls engine speed is usually found as a motorcycle-like twist-grip on the collective, or as an overhead lever between the two pilots. In almost all helicopters the throttle is automatic. Before takeoff you set it to 100% and leave it there the whole time. So don't mess with the throttle.]
This is the same as the L1 and L2 buttons also. You stop the ship by holding L2.
If you do this you will also head straight toward the ground like a ton of bricks (See landing below).

Landing:
To land you need to first slow your ship as you come closer to the ground. Pull back on the left stick. Tap L1 to ascend a bit as you go to cushion the blow and then watch for that sweet spot where as you are pulling back on the left stick your shipGÇÖs forward momentum slows but has not yet begun to get backward momentum and start moving you backwards. ThatGÇÖs the point to tap the stick forward again to correct yourself and bring the nose back level and hit the L2 downward thrust.
However, you donGÇÖt want to hold the L2 downward thrust so that you hit the ground. You want to hold it until you get to what looks like about a meter or two off the ground then continue to hit it until you get closer to the ground before holding it and actually settling.
Also, yawing or turning the ship 90-¦ to 180-¦ can help to slow your momentum and counteract it so you come to a quick stop.
So, to land you would descend gradually with L2, pull back on stick until you get to an almost zero momentum (very small window of opportunity) and then counter maneuver by bumping your stick forward to right the nose back level and possibly yaw with the right stick to twist the ship around and help cut the momentum. Once close to the ground and as little movement foward or backward as possible you bump the L2 button to gradually bring you to the ground. DonGÇÖt hold L2 and slam into the ground.

Maneuvering:
When flying a dropship you donGÇÖt just need to consider your next maneuver but also the maneuver after that first oneGǪ the counter maneuver.
Every maneuver is helped by performing a small counter maneuver to keep your ship level and steady.
If you roll left you need to already be planning to roll back right a bit. The quicker you want to roll left the faster you need to roll a bit back right to steady your ship and keep on your new course.
If you go forward really fast you need to plan to pull back and steady the nose. The ship tries to do this anyway but if you help it out it will do it quicker. Also, you want to compensate for lost altitude so bumping the L1 Upward Thrust helps.
Again, the quicker you perform a maneuver you must immediately apply a subtler counter maneuver. Your actions will not be immediately apparent though.
Remember you are skimming across the air. Imagine your ship is tied at the top with a string or picture riding a jet ski or swinging on a swing.
To get momentum you must lean into the maneuver and give it a couple of seconds to register with the ship. DonGÇÖt overcompensate a maneuver.
To keep from going in the same direction and slamming into a building you must pull back, turn and give more power (thrust) to quickly move away from something and go the opposite direction (remember your counter maneuvering).
Did I mention the counter maneuver? Yeah, you should be dreaming about counter maneuvering.

Landling and the art of the L2 Downward Thrust:
At first the dropship will trick you and make you think something different is happening than what is actually happening. Delay in feedback of your commands to maneuver and the ship trying to change course in order to respond to commands can make it look like one control is doing something different than what I mentioned above. I first thought the L1 upward thrust was actually giving me forward thrust and that was what was making me go faster. I realized that I was speeding up because I had continued forward momentum. I wasnGÇÖt pushing the left stick forward but I still had forward momentum.
Remember, itGÇÖs not like an LAV/HAV where as soon as you let off the left stick you stop.
For this reason, delay in response of the dropship you need to be careful when low or between buildings or obstacles. Too much momentum one way will cause you to try and make a strong counter maneuver and thus you get into what I like to call a crash loop. You are going to crash and burn.
You could get out of it but with some damage. But you do it through subtle counter maneuvering and L2 Downward Thrust.
The downward thrust can be your worst enemy however, you must realize that many times what makes you start slamming into things is because you have too much thrust.
You try to correct it with a counter maneuver but your thrust is the real problem. You must decrease the thrust as you counter maneuver.
However, do not cut the thrust entirely or you will slam to the ground and probably explode.
A great example of this is when I backed into a building at ground level and got stuck with my nose pointing upward.
I somehow then got my ship to finally go backwards and then it ended up on its side. I kept hitting buttons wondering how to make it right itself.
Guess what. I held down the L2 Downward Thrust button until it actually cut my thrusts completely off. The ship then came back and righted itself.
Play with the downward thrust. Learn how to do things while using the downward thrust as part of the maneuver until you can get good with the subtleties of it.
Downward thrust can be your friend although at first it seems like a *****.
Want to land on a tall building without much landing space? (Something IGÇÖm still trying to do well). Learn to work that downward thrust in so you can stop from overshooting the building. The trick is to get low enough to the building so you can cut the thrust without damaging the ship. You need to do it more quickly and abruptly though than if landing on a wide area of ground.
DO NOT LAND YOUR DROPSHIP ON UNLEVEL GROUND! It might just roll down the hill.
Again watch in that video posted above how the chopper sways subtly back and forth until it gets a good landing. Also, realize how dropships suck at subtlety. Fine tuning is a bit lacking with the dropship without taking some damage. If you are this close to a surface though remember to cut that thrust to zero before you sway too far from your landing target. |
